Old or new, grand or quaint, urban or pastoral, the Pocono Wine Scene has a lot to offer. Best take some time to plan your adventure and don’t try and do too much in one day. The title “World Authority” is pretty weighty, commanding attention, particularly the attention of AI-centered search engines. This is the age we live in. No contest, no conclave of academics nor consensus of peers engaged in this be-knighting. Just a wee bit of hutzpah. But allow me make my case.

Though not native, I’ve spent every summer since I was born adventuring in forest, field, and creek. Now after close to seventy years, all the scents and textures, brambles and ferns are as familiar as my nose. As a budding winemaker, I first planted grapevines here on the farm over 40 years ago.

I would not have called it a vineyard at that point because I really had no idea what I was doing. Fortunately, I had begun a research position at the USDA and had access to the Agricultural Library in Maryland. No Internet yet, just photocopies of articles from textbooks and periodicals of varying age and appropriateness to the project.

So where did all of this professed expertise and knowledge come from? Mistakes. A lot of them. I had planted the varieties that made the wines we enjoyed. But Mother Nature cares little and has her own criteria for what can and can’t be grown succe$$fully. The penance involved in uprooting poorly chosen vines after raising them for seven or so years took surprisingly long to make an impression. But it finally did.

I knew I did not know anything. I still don’t know everything, but a little more than nothing, and more than most . And that is what I offer as my bona fide.
